Bantayan Island : A Holy Week Getaway

by - 4/07/2015

"Where do you spend your holy week vacation? Why not try something remarkable... "
Bantayan Island, Cebu - is a tourist destination island located at the northern tip of Cebu Province. Famous for its white sand and most of all the island is famous for its celebration during the holy week.

Well, to clear out things the celebration is not basically a fiesta but a holy week celebration itself. According to some sources the people of the island is exempt  for abstinence of meat as it was declared by the Papal Indult during the 1840's. Why? Bantayan is a fishing island and during the holy week the fishermen refuse to go fishing becuase it is a widely belief that fishing during the day is a misfortune and is likely to accidents. Therefore, seafoods are scarce during the holiday and to ensure the people will subscribe during the holiday the church officials considers the eating of meat.

Since it's summer this is a perfect place to spend your summer and participate the holy week tradition. It's like hitting two goals in a single hit.

To reach the island, take a bus ride from the North Bus Terminal, Cebu to Hagnaya Port. Then from Hagnaya Port take a boat to Sta. Fe, Bantayan Island. I recommend not to take the bus going directly to Bantayan Island. If you are to compare, you can save if you're gonna stop at Hagnaya Port. The Bus going directly to Bantayan Island is P200 for air conditioned with a separate fare for the ferry boat. And other disadvantage is the bus has a limited schedule which will pissed you off for sure.

When you arrived at Sta. Fe, expect all the resorts are fully booked but its not a problem you'll have alot of options to stay in the island during the holiday. Either you will rent some rooms from the local townsfolk or go to resorts which offers tents for rental. As our experience, we went to Sugar Beach, Sta. Fe and rent a tent which can occupy at least 4 people for P700. Then you can rent an additional bed foams for about P200.

The resort was indeed flock by number of tents from the resort's garden to the seashore. Looks like everyone is having a camping adventure.

Party? Yes! There we're lots of parties along the beaches including disco, music bands and many more.

Hope to see you there at 2016 Holy Week and have a great summer!
